Police are disappointed by the number of motorists they have detected speeding recently on the Wide Bay, Burnett and Bunya highways, particularly considering the recent weather.

Kilkivan and Goomeri police and the Gympie Patrol Group have been stopping and fining drivers and riders on all three highways.

About 3:30pm on May 17, a 44-year-old Adare man riding a motorcycle was detected travelling at 139km/h in an 100km/h zone on the Burnett Highway at Goomeri. He received $643 fine and lost six demerit points.

Five more drivers fined ($459 and four demerit points) for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h but not more than 30km/h:

  • About 4:50pm on May 5, a 19-year-old Southside man was travelling at 130km/h on the Wide Bay Highway at Woolooga
  • About 2:00pm on May 15, a 24-year-old Fitzgibbon man was travelling at 121km/h on the Wide Bay Highway at Kilkivan
  • About 6:30am on May 16, a 30-year-old Dulong man was travelling at 123km/h  on the Wide Bay Highway at Kilkivan
  • About 11:00am on May 18, a 61-year-old Widgee man was travelling at 124km/h on the Wide Bay Highway at Lower Wonga
  • About 3:30pm on May 18, a 55-year-old Monto man was travelling at 122km/h on the Burnett Highway at Booubyjan.

As well, 18 drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit by at least 13km/h but not more than 20km/h, which incurs a $275 fine and a loss of three demerit points; and five were detected exceeding the speed limit by less than 13km/h which incurs a $183 fine and the loss of one demerit point.

“Speeding has a direct consequence on your life and those around you,” Senior Constable Darren Hewitt said.

“Police are urging motorists, particularly in light of the recent significant weather events, to slow down and remember that speeding is a Fatal Five factor, along with not wearing seat belts, drink or drug driving, fatigue and distraction.

“Expect police anywhere, anytime.”
