The South Burnett Thrashers have enjoyed an incredible start to their return to the rugby union paddock, downing Toowoomba Rangers 55-7 on Saturday.

The Round 1 game of the Darling Downs competition was held at Gold Park, the home of the Toowoomba Rangers.

“We were given a very warm welcome back in the Downs comp, with the other teams making a tunnel for the Thrashers to run on to the field,” club president Jamie Shirlaw said.

“This was our first competition game since our last season back in 2013.

“It was great to see the team start with a strong performance, but they deserve it.

“The squad has been training since the start of November last year and had trial matches against quality teams in higher divisions.”

Coach Mike Bishop said the Thrashers’ defence had been outstanding.

“This opened up many scoring opportunities for the boys,” Jamie said.

“We would like to thank our major sponsors Sunpork and Kingaroy Quarry Supplies for helping us get back up and running.”

Thrashers tries were scored by Lynray Tingiia, Apisalome Waqatabu, Malaki Malaki, Braedon McKee (2), Visesio Torris, Marcus Jensen and Sata Tale.

Marcus Jensen kicked five conversions.

The Thrashers’ next game will be played on April 30 against Gatton at Risdon Oval in Warwick.
