Using a mobile phone while driving is not only illegal, it could have fatal consequences

Murgon police have warned drivers they will be targeting Fatal Five offences this Road Safety Week, including using mobile phones.

It is illegal to hold a mobile phone in your hand – or have it resting on any part of your body, including your lap – when driving a motor vehicle on Queensland roads.

The penalty is a $1000 fine and four demerit points.

A police spokesperson said using a phone while driving was as dangerous as drink-driving.

“Keep your mind on your driving/riding/walking and look at the road, not at your phone,” the spokesperson said.

“Don’t use your phone while driving, riding, or walking near traffic.

“New fixed and portable cameras detect drivers using mobile phones illegally and failing to wear a seatbelt, have been introduced by the Queensland Government.

“Activate the ‘do not disturb while driving’ feature in your smartphone before you get behind the wheel or on your motorcycle.”
