An old con trick that has been doing the rounds of a country towns for years has “resurfaced” … this time in Toowoomba.

Toowoomba Police have issued a warning to residents in relation to people purporting to work for a fictitious business.

Police say the offenders tell homeowners they have leftover bitumen from a council job and they can fix up their driveway at a small cost.

An inferior product, along with questionable workmanship is then done to complete the job very quickly.

The workers then allegedly become aggressive if the finished job is questioned and they demand immediate payment before leaving without fixing the problems.

Standover tactics are used, often demanding thousands of dollars from the victim.

Police advise the public to always check the legitimacy of the organisation or individuals before engaging services.

Avoid paying in cash and don’t make any payments until the work has been completed and you are satisfied with the result.

Always obtain a written quote and do not feel pressured into accepting the service.

If the quote seems too good to be true, then it more than likely is.
