The University of Southern Queensland has welcomed new Federal Government incentives to attract more international students to study outside the big cities.

The Federal Government has unveiled its “Destination Australia Program” as part of its decentralisation strategy to drive growth and development in regional Australia.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said the announcement included scholarships and visa changes.

The new program will also encourage more Australian students to study in regional Australia.

More than 1000 scholarships of $15,000 will be offered per year to support the study and living expenses associated with studying a Certificate IV to Doctorate level qualification at a regional campus of an eligible tertiary education provider.

“International students studying at regional universities will have access to an extra year on a post-study work visa,” Prof Mackenzie said.

“These are important steps in the right direction, helping to cement higher education’s place in broader regional development.

“These scholarships and visa changes will enable students to gain an invaluable education in regional Queensland, and then have an ongoing contribution to our community.”
