Forty-three cyclists and 12 support staff camped overnight at the Blackbutt Showgrounds on Monday as part of a huge fundraising effort for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The riders are mostly firefighters, but also include some ambulance paramedics and a police officer.

They are raising funds for a cause close to their hearts … vital research into childhood burns injuries and scar management.

This is the 12th annual Bike4Burns ride.

They started at Southport on May 18 before heading to Boonah, Killarney and Toowoomba.

Their next stop after Blackbutt is at Toogoolawah.

The riders will finish their trek at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane on Thursday (May 24).

The president of the Bike4Burns ride organising committee, Gordon Hemphrey, told southburnett.com.au more than $50,000 had been raised so far, but he hoped that figure would keep on rising over the next few days.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll said QFES was proud to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation through fundraising activities.

“QFES has supported the Children’s Hospital Foundation for a number of years and Bike4Burns provides the perfect opportunity for us to continue raising awareness and supporting a worthy cause,” Ms Carroll said.
