The South Burnett Saints started this year’s season on a winning note by trouncing the Highfields Lions at Kingaroy’s Lyle Vidler Oval on Saturday.

The Saints won all four quarters, and clearly outclassed the Lions in three of them.

In the first quarter, the local team steamed away to a solid early lead, finishing 7.4 (46) to the Lions 1.3 (9).

The Saints kept up the pace in the second quarter, coming home 14.6-90 to the Lions 4.6-30 by half time.

But in the third stanza Highfields found new life and actually outpointed the Saints in a high-scoring stanza. Saints seemed to flag a little but still finished ahead 18.8 (116) to 9.8 (62).

The Saints finished the match solidly by adding another 46 points to their tally, while pegging the Lions back to two goals.

The final score was Saints 25.12 (162) against the Lions’ 11.8 (74).
