The spirit of giving is strong in the South Burnett at Christmas time …
Year 6 students at St Mary’s Catholic College today handed over a ute-load of non-perishable foodstuffs to be distributed to local residents by the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Teacher Scott Collier told the school’s last assembly for the year that the pupils had approached him and asked him what they could do to make a difference this Christmas.
“They really took this project on,” he said.
“They put up their hands and just ran with it.”
Every Wednesday the Year 6s went around the school collecting non-perishable foodstuffs from fellow students and teachers.
They even made a video to promote the project.
Local St Vincent de Paul Society representative Peter Janz said he was “blown away” to accept the donations.
“I am amazed by the efforts of Grade 6 and on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul Society I would like to thank them,” he said.
“This will assist so many people and give them a little bit more happiness at this time of the year.”
He also thanked the students’ parents and teachers who had donated the tinned and packaged food.
“Our community is very lucky to have such people,” he said.
