A  “Bug Fest” will be happening on Saturday from 10:00am at Nanango Library … but there’s no need to call the pest controllers!

The Library will be celebrating the arrival of the mystery Reading Bug Egg.

A South Burnett Regional Council spokesman said there would be plenty to see and do on the day when the Egg lands in the Library.

Parents, carers and children are invited to join story time leaders as they wind their way around Nanango shops reading a variety of exciting stories.

Children can meet the story time leaders outside Nanango Library between 9:30am and 10:00am to begin the story trail which will continue until noon.

Participants are asked to “wear red” to show that they’re “well read” and bring a hat to stay safe from the sun.

Parents or carers must accompany children on the morning.

Children are also invited to get their entries into the Design the Bug Competition. Entries can be placed into the box at the Nanango Library by Thursday (November 8).

The winner for the Bug Design Competition will be announced by visiting author John Danalis at 10:30am at the Nanango Cultural Centre.

Matthew Hayden reading to his children

Kingaroy’s favourite son Matthew Hayden is not just a great cricketer, he’s also a great Dad who understands the importance of reading to your children at an early age.

“I would encourage all parents in and around Nanango to get involved in the Reading Bug project,” he said.

“Not only does it allow quality time in a creative and fun space but is critical to your child’s development. Come along to one of the many reading activities that are being run in Nanango or if you can’t make it, grab a book and take some time to connect with your little ones through reading, I guarantee your children and you will love it! ”

The Nanango Reading Bug project aims to increase the number of residents (including Dads) who read to their children.

Children have to read to the egg to help it grow and eventually hatch.

The egg will be nesting in local shops, kindergartens, schools and at the monthly Nanango Markets on the first Saturday of every month.

Everyone in the community will get a chance to read to the egg.
