Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey

The State Government has asked tourism industry representatives and the public to have a say on a new draft Queensland Drive Tourism Strategy.

Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey said the strategy aimed to encourage more travellers to take a driving holiday in Queensland.

“Our regional cities and towns rely heavily on the drive tourism market to support their local businesses, and we want to take advantage of the great opportunities this growing market represents,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Drive tourism is a key element of the Newman Government’s DestinationQ action plan.

“The strategy will stimulate and re-energise the drive tourism market through a coordinated approach between government agencies, local governments, regional tourism organisations and other organisations such as the RACQ.

“The tourism industry has been crying out for a co-ordinated strategy and this will help us achieve our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020.”

RACQ Executive Manager Tourism Andrew Millward said the consultation paper demonstrated a united approach to “turbo-charge” the drive tourism market in Queensland.

“RACQ has a long history of promoting the benefits of drive tourism, and by pooling our resources, we’re working together to encourage Queenslanders to holiday at home, while also enticing interstate visitors to explore the Sunshine State’s diverse landscape,” Mr Millward said.

Caravanning Queensland CEO Ron Chapman also welcomed the strategy.

“I am pleased to see the current government has recognised the Drive Tourism sector which has long been neglected,” Mr Chapman said.

Ms Stuckey said the State Government was particularly interested in feedback on:

  • Marketing and promotion
  • Signage
  • Infrastructure
  • Accommodation and facilities
  • Meeting consumer needs
  • Road quality, maintenance and safety
  • Visitor information and technology applications.

“This presents a real opportunity for Queensland to take advantage of the economic benefits and word-of-mouth promotion that the drive tourism market can offer. I encourage people to have their say on the future of drive tourism in Queensland.” Ms Stuckey said.
