Centenary of Kumbia Birthday Party
- Kumbia will be celebrating its Centenary today with a community birthday party at the Kumbia Memorial Hall and its precincts. The event will run from 10:00am this morning through until late tonight and all current and former Kumbia residents - as well as anyone who's ever had a connection with this charming South Burnett town - is very welcome to come along and join in. Amongst many other things, today's celebration will feature lots of games for the children and adults including a tug-o-war; a pie eating competition; a lamington eating competition for the kids; decorated bikes; displays; a parade; food stalls and market stalls. Kumbia's Historical Walk will also be officially opened today and there'll be a foot race, a birthday cake, raffles, souvenirs, memorabilia and - of course! a birthday cake to celebrate it. In addition, the Kumbia CWA will be holding a cooking competition and there'll also be an Apron and Tea Cosy competition too (contact Gayle on (07) 4164-4175 for entry forms). And if you attend in historic dress (ie anything from the 1970s or earlier) you can be in the running for a really great prize too! Christmas In July Smorgasbord Dinner - Wondai
- Here's something you'd better book early for! The award-winning Dimities Cottage will be holding their famous Christmas In July Christmas Dinner Smorgasbord at the Cottage in 49 Haly Street, Wondai from 6:30pm until late tonight. As usual, Dimities will be decked out in its Christmas finest with close to 1,000 Yuletide decorations of all descriptions and Chef Graham and his merry team will be turning out a tremendous all-you-can-eat spread of traditional Christmas goodies. Tickets to this BYO affair are $25 per head and this dinner is so famous that if you don't book your chances of getting a seat are pretty well zero. Wondai Country Markets
- The Wondai Regional Art Gallery's popular, getting-bigger-every-month Wondai Country Markets will be operating in Coronation Park in the Wondai CBD from 7:00am to 12:00 noon today. Today's markets will feature (amongst any other things) stallholders selling fresh fruit and vegetables, arts and crafts, useful knick-knacks and clothing. There'll also be live entertainment; lots and lots of other stalls selling great gifts and goodies; and the Wondai Kindergarten's BBQs firing up from 6:45am to dish out hearty breakfasts to early bargain hunters. Pig On A Spit Night - Maidenwell
- Maidenwell's historic Maidenwell Hotel will be holding another of their popular monthly Pig On A Spit evenings from 6:00pm until late tonight tonight (dinner is served from 6:00pm to 8:00pm). There'll be live entertainment and lots of cold beer, as well as more pork than you can possibly poke a stick at! The hotel's Pig On A Spit nights are held on the last Saturday of every month and they're always a lot of fun! The cost is only $12.50 for adults and $6.50 for children. More information? Kingaroy Community Garden Working Bee & Planning Meeting
- The South Burnett Regional Council's Healthy Communities Initiative are re-establishing a Kingaroy Community Garden group around the Pound Street Community Garden - and today they'll be holding a Working Bee & Planning Meeting at the garden between 9:00am and 11:00am to help set the group's future direction. Anyone who'd like to get involved in this project is very welcome to come along (BYO chair, sun protection, water bottle, gardening gloves and closed-toe shoes). There'll also be a shared morning tea, so bring a plate. Note: Pound Street will be closed off to all traffic due to floodway repair works today, so you'll need to access the garden on foot. But there's plenty of parking available in surrounding streets
Bowls Club Bingo - Kingaroy
- The Kingaroy Bowling Club at 141 Youngman St, Kingaroy will be running bingo matches from 7:30pm this evening with over $1000 in prizes on offer. More details from the club on (07) 4162-1404
South Burnett Soccer - Kingaroy and Nanango
- The 13th round of the Evolution Solar Soccer League will be played out in Kingaroy and Nanango today. In Kingaroy, 2nd division Weests will play Barambah at Tom Alford Oval in Oliver Bond Street at 2:00pm. This will be followed by a clash between the womens' teams at 3:15pm. However, the 1st division match (which was originally scheduled for 5:00pm) will not be held - Barambah 1st division have had to forfeit this week due to player injuries. And in Nanango, the 2nd division Nanango will play Gunners on the Nanango soccer grounds at 12:15pm. They'll be followed by the Women's Division at 1:50pm; and then the 1st Division match between the two teams at 3:15pm. Note: All today's junior soccer matches will be held at the Kingaroy soccer grounds, which have recovered from the recent rains. Games will commence at 8:00am this morning for all junior divisions and continue on into the afternoon. Spectators and supporters are most welcome!
South Burnett Rugby League - Blackbutt, Nanango and Murgon
- This week's round of the South Burnett Premier League will be played at the Blackbutt Sportsgrounds, Fred Kassulke Oval in Nanango and the Murgon Showgrounds today. In Blackbutt, the A-grade Timbertowners will play the Kingaroy Red Ants at 3:00pm. In Nanango, the Stags will clash with the Wondai Wolves at 3:15pm. And in Murgon, the A-grade Mustangs will take on the indomitable Cherbourg Hornets at 4:00pm. Two under-18 games will also be played in Murgon today, when Kingaroy take on Easts at 1:15pm, followed by Murgon playing Across The Waves at 2:45pm. Spectators and supporters are very welcome!
Saturday Rugby Union - Kingaroy
- The South Burnett Thrashers will be playing their fifth home game for this season at T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 1:30pm this afternoon when they come up against the Toowoomba Bears in what promises to be a very interesting match. The Thrashers enjoyed their first triumph of the season against the fancied USQ Saints when the teams met at St Marys oval a fortnight ago, which came just a week after a hairsbreadth loss to UQ Highfields. So all eyes will be on the local lads to see if they can continue what appears to be a big unpswing in their form. Spectators and supporters are very welcome!
Dance - Booie Hall
- A dance will be held at Booie Hall from 7:30pm until around 11:30pm this evening. Music will be supplied by Mark's Music and there'll be the usual great supper, novelties and lucky door prize. Nanango Hack & Pony Club 50th Anniversary Campdraft
- The Nanango Hack and Pony Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend with a campdraft (today) and a guymkhana (tomorrow) at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street, Nanango. Today's campdraft has attracted more than 120 competitors and the action will get underway at 8:30am and run on until 4:00pm, when prizes will be handed out to the winners. Tomorrow's gymkhana will also get underway at 8:30am and will run into the early afternoon. Admission to the campdraft is 100% free for spectators and overnight camping facilities are available for $12.50 per camp site. What's On At The Wineries This Weekend
- The South Burnett's wineries and cellar doors will all be open this weekend if you want to relax in their cafes and/or taste their wines. The South Burnett is now the largest wine region in Queensland and (excluding the Granite Belt) larger than all the State's other wine regions put together.
