Vietnam Veterans Day
- Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, which is also known as Long Tan Day in memory of the 18 Australians killed at the battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966. Vietnam Veterans Day has come to symbolise our nation's collective memory of the Vietnam War and in the South Burnett, special services are conducted every year to mark it. In Blackbutt, Blackbutt RSL will be holding a wreath-laying service at the corner of Muir and Douglas streets at 11:00am this morning. Dress is smart casual with full decorations and medals, and the service will be followed by lunch back at the RSL. In Nanango, a service will be held at the Cenotaph at 10:00am this morning, followed by light refreshments at Nanango RSL. In Kingaroy, Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations will be held in front of the RSL's flagpoles in Markwell Street from 10:30am, followed with light refreshments in the RSL; in Wondai, a service will be held at the War Memorial in front of Wondai Town Hall in Mackenzie Street, beginning at 11:00am; in Cherbourg, a service will be held at Cherbourg's War Memorial at the corner of Fisher Street and Barambah Avenue at 8:00am, followed by refreshments at nearby Ration Shed Museum; and in Murgon, a service will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Gore Street at 10:50am, followed by a free lunch and camaraderie at the nearby Veterans Drop-In Centre at 44 Stephens Street. You can also find out more about the Vietnam Veterans Association - which looks after the needs of Vietnam vets and helps promote VV Day - on their web site. PS: In recent years, VV Day has also come to symnbolise remembrance of troops who served in the Middle East and Afghanistan, and veterans of either (or both) these conflicts are also very welcome.
