Toowoomba Regional Council has joined with Queensland Country to host workshops to build tourism within the region.

Council hopes the workshops will draw out unique stories and highlight colourful identities or interesting features in the different towns with the goal of driving tourism and greater economic turnover.

Cr Edwina Farquhar said every town and district had countless stories and little-known attractions which could be developed into a drawcard.

“The workshops will help participants draw out their town’s most compelling stories that could be turned into visitor experiences,” Cr Farquhar said.

“We are encouraging business owners, community groups, historical societies, tourism operators, artists, storytellers and interested residents to develop their ideas at the sessions.

“We have so many unique areas from natural beauty spots to attractions and buildings that are steeped in a locality’s history that will hold great appeal for visitors from near and far.

“By telling our own stories we can give our towns and districts far greater prominence, connection and a distinct identity on any future tourism map.

“We can provide visitors with authentic and fascinating Southern Queensland experiences that express our rich history and the people behind pioneering and 21st century stories.”

The workshops will be held in the Community Rooms above Toowoomba City Library:

  • Discover your story: Saturday, July 18, 10:00am to noon – identify the stories, people and places that make your town unique
  • Design the experience: Saturday, August 1, 10:30am to 1:00pm – transform stories into visitor experiences and trail concepts

To register, phone 131-872.
