The Wondai Lions Club welcomed a special group of cyclists and their support crew members on Thursday night who are raising funds for research into rare forms of ovarian cancer.

The 11 riders taking part in the 2026 Ride For Research, dubbed the “Great Queensland Rail Trail Adventure”, have been exploring the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail (BBIRT), the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail (KKRT) and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT).

They left Boynedale, near Gladstone, on Tuesday with overnight stops at Monto and Gayndah.

After spending the night in Wondai on Thursday, they were heading to Linville before finishing at Wulkuraka on Saturday.

The group is raising funds for Rare Ovarian Cancer Inc, a charity which supports the Monash University’s Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne and researcher Associate Professor Simon Chu.

Dr Chu joined the riders for the first leg of the ride to Monto.

The cyclists set a target of $100,000 for the 2026 ride, which they passed on Thursday night with a generous donation of $4500 from the Wondai Lions Club.

This takes the total amount raised by the charity since it began to more than $500,000.

The Wondai Lions donated all profits from their market days in May and June, as well as raffles at the Wondai RSL Club and three numbers boards.

They catered dinner for the riders on Thursday night at the Lions Pavilion as well as breakfast on Friday morning.
