Cherbourg and Somerset councils will receive a total of $2.3 million from the State Government to support recycling and reduce waste going into landfill.

The funding, delivered through the Resource Recovery Boost Fund, was announced before the recent Country Cabinet meeting in Cherbourg.

The Cherbourg funding will help divert approximately 580 tonnes of South Burnett waste from landfill through the installation of new equipment at the Cherbourg Material Recovery Facility.

The upgrades will include a cardboard screen, levelling drum, waste compactor and conveyor systems to improve processing efficiency and throughput.

“This is about getting waste out of the ground and backing practical solutions that turn it into value,” Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said.

“We’re supporting councils with the infrastructure they need to manage waste smarter and keep their communities clean and sustainable.”

Cherbourg Council CEO Chatur Zala welcomed the funding.

“This funding is very valuable to the Cherbourg community,” Mr Zala said.

“The Cherbourg MRF works in conjunction with other nearby regional councils. This investment secures local jobs and enhances the efficiency of the operation.”
