A large storm cell which crossed the South Burnett on Friday evening ripped off roofs, brought down trees and carpeted large areas in hail.

Most of the damage appears to have occurred in the Nanango area.

A flat in Burnett Street had its roof ripped off by the strong wind, with the rain and hail causing considerable damage inside.

Local councillor Jane Erkens said there were tree branches down across town, and a large ironbark near the State School had been pulled out of the ground.

Photos on social media showed damaged sheds and water tanks.

The heavy rain and a blackout disrupted performances at the Heritage Nanango Country Music Muster but fortunately the showgrounds escaped the worst of the storm.

A spokesperson said a couple of caravan annexes were blown down and fallen branches caused minor damage to two vehicles.

Karinya aged care facility in Church Street also suffered minor damage, with trees and branches down.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning at 4:48pm for the storm cell moving north-easterly from the Bunya Mountains.

It appears to have cut across the region south of Kingaroy.

BOM warned that damaging winds greater than 90km/h and hail larger than 2cm was possible.

Cr Erkens said the storm struck Nanango before 5:00pm but although large amounts of hail fell, it was mostly pea-size.

There was still hail on the ground on Saturday morning.
