One of the South Burnett’s largest employers faces a charge of breaching workplace health and safety legislation.

Swickers Kingaroy Bacon Factory Pty Ltd has been listed for mention in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The company faces one charge of failing to comply with health and safety duty (Category 2).

A spokesperson from the Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor (OWHSP) told southburnett.com.au the filed complaint and summons alleged the defendant company, in 2021, failed to manage the risk posed to workers by the use of an acidic cleaning product at its abattoir.

“It is alleged that workers were exposed to a risk of sustaining serious chemical burns,” the spokesperson said.

“Given that the matter remains before the Court, the OWHSP does not propose to provide any further details of the allegations at this time.”

The OWHSP is an independent prosecution office, established by State Parliament, to conduct proceedings for breaches of Queensland’s workplace health and safety, resources safety and health laws.
