One of the South Burnett’s oldest community kindergartens marked its 53rd year of operations recently with a dinner to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The evening was hosted by the Kumbia Kindergarten in Kumbia Hall.

Kumbia Kindy was established in 1969 and after operating successfully for many years, went into recess when enrolments declined.

But it was re-established in 1989 and since then has operated continuously, providing much-needed pre-school services for Kumbia and its surrounding districts.

To help fund its operations, the kindy runs a social get-together to mark International Women’s Day every March, and a fun cricket day in Kumbia in May.

The International Women’s Day celebration has traditionally taken the form of a lunch.

But this year organisers decided to try a dinner instead, and it proved so successful it’s likely this will be the format that will be used in future.

In all, about 60 guests enjoyed a night featuring a three-course dinner prepared by J.C. Catering, and a licensed bar.

During the evening they also heard from four guest speakers.

Successful business woman Treena Welch attended the dinner in person to give her talk, while author Maya Linnell, campdrafter Felicity Burton and Mama Matters founder Fiona Weaver gave recorded presentations.

Guests also enjoyed a silent auction and a 100s board.

The dinner was sponsored by Stanwell and Tarong Power Stations, SunPork Fresh Foods and Smoothy Contracting.

Volunteer Rhonda Handley operated the bar, which also served up soft drinks and brightly coloured cordial
