The southern approach to Krebs Bridge near Murgon on Saturday afternoon … the bridge may not reopen until Thursday, according to Council

February 27, 2022

South Burnett Regional Council has warned that Krebs Bridge, near Murgon, may not re-open until Thursday.

Video captured by a local resident on Saturday captured slabs of bitumen pavement being lifted up by the floodwaters.

The South Burnett Local Disaster Management Group warned on Sunday evening that flooding will continue across the region, particularly along Barkers Creek and Barambah Creek.

At this stage it is expected that the Burnett Highway will re-open Monday afternoon following Department of Transport and Main Roads bridge inspections and repairs.

The Bunya Highway at Krebs Bridge and access to Cherbourg is expected to be cut until at least Tuesday afternoon with the peak spill from Bjelke-Petersen Dam expected tomorrow morning.

A South Burnett Regional Council spokesperson said the Bjelke-Petersen Dam level was 127 per cent.

“Please note that Council is aware that there is extensive damage to Krebs Bridge, and it is likely that it will not re-open until sometime Thursday,” the spokesperson said.

“It is expected that the extensive damage to the road network will take weeks and months to repair, particularly following back-to-back weather events from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth.

“The community is asked to report road damage to (07) 4189-9100.”
