South Burnett mayor Brett Otto has called upon all community members to rally together and support each other during the latest COVID-19 escalation in south-east Queensland.

He reminded residents that anyone leaving any of the 11 affected Local Government Areas after 1:00am on Saturday, July 31, and entering the South Burnett – whether they are returning residents or visitors – must comply with State Government requirements.

The 11 LGAs are: Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Redland City, Scenic Rim, Somerset and Sunshine Coast.

He said the requirements included social distancing and face mask obligations for visitors to our region.

Mayor Otto also urged residents to be proactive and book in to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations.

“With more cases of the Delta variant appearing in recent days across Brisbane, this is not a time for complacency in our region,” he said.

“The only way we will get on top of the virus and see life get back to normal is through broad community vaccination. It is incumbent upon all of us to keep our communities safe.”

Mayor Otto received his first COVID-19 vaccination on July 24, and has encouraged residents to contact their medical practitioner to discuss their personal circumstances.

Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio

Toowoomba mayor Paul Antonio has stressed the need for residents to understand the rules around wearing face masks.

“Our area borders the Lockyer Valley, which is part of the current lockdown, so it’s important Toowoomba residents know when they need to be wearing masks,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Being in such close proximity to our neighbours, we have a number of Toowoomba residents who travel between the two regions every day for essential work.

“Anyone who has been to the Lockyer Valley since 1:00am on July 31, or is continuing to travel there for work, must adhere to the public health directives imposed in that region, which currently includes the mandatory use of face masks.

“When you return to the Toowoomba Region, you, and anyone within your household, must also continue to abide by those rules.

“I appreciate how difficult this may be, however, these are the rules we must adhere to while this current lockdown continues.”
