Many South Burnett residents woke on Wednesday to the coldest May morning in 17 years.

Kingaroy airport’s weather station recorded a minimum overnight temperature of -2.4 degrees.

This was just 0.6 degrees above the coldest May morning recorded in the past 17 years (-3.0 degrees, which was set on May 23, 2002).

And things will stay much the same heading into the weekend.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the remainder of the week seems likely to remain cold.

“We had a trough move through on Monday night and into Tuesday,” BOM forecaster Adam Blazak said.

“This brought cool, dry air into the atmosphere, making our nights very cool.

“We are also expecting another cool burst to move through tomorrow night, so Friday may be colder again.”

Other places around the South Burnett were also feeling the cold on Wednesday.

Toowoomba hit an overnight low of -2.6 degrees, Wellcamp Airport -5.6 degrees, Oakey -2.3 degrees and Dalby 0.9 degrees.

To the north, Gympie saw an overnight low of 2.5 degrees.

Winter will officially start this Saturday, June 1.
