Toowoomba Regional Council plans to begin work next Monday on a revamp of the historic Goombungee War Memorial which will spell the end of the surrounding garden bed.

The changes will form part of construction work currently underway in Mocatta Street.

Cr Joe Ramia said the plans for the State Heritage-listed War Memorial Precinct would reflect “extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders such as the RSL”.

“The proposed works preserve the memorial’s historical significance, whilst enhancing the memorial setting and the immediate surrounds,” Cr Ramia said.

“The plan seeks to remove the garden bed and associated wall surrounding the memorial, which impedes views of the memorial and detracts from its appearance.”

Cr Carol Taylor said the Mocatta Street works would complement the war memorial.

“The road around the memorial is intended to be a ‘shared’ zone for small vehicle traffic only, and the memorial will be protected by a new outer kerb barrier with bollards,” Cr Taylor said.

“Other upgrade works will include new pedestrian footpaths with connections across Mocatta Street and road and car parking improvements.”

“As part of the upgrade there will be traffic restrictions in place. Work will generally be carried out between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, however some out-of-hours works may be required.”

The concept plan for the memorial can be viewed at the Goombungee Customer Service Centre.
