South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell hands over a $56,000 cheque for the proceeds of this year’s Mayor’s Gala Charity Ball to Hospital Foundation vice-chairman Scott McLennan

The Lady Bjelke-Petersen Community Hospital Foundation is now $57,902 better off thanks to two events – one big, one smaller – that ran in Kingaroy last month.

Last week South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell presented the Community Hospital Foundation’s June meeting with a $56,000 cheque for the proceeds of this year’s Mayor’s Gala Charity Ball.

And he was followed immediately afterwards by representatives from the Kingaroy QCWA’s daytime and twilight branches with a cheque for $1902, which was raised by the QCWA’s Luncheon Hall at this year’s Kingaroy Show.

The cheques were both presented to Foundation vice-chairman Scott McLennan, filling in for chairman Wayne Kratzmann who had to be away that night on another engagement.

Mayor Campbell said he had set a goal to raise $50,000 for the hospital this year, and was as surprised as everyone else when the Charity Ball exceeded this target by 12 per cent.

“The community signed over 10,000 petitions to keep the doors of this community hospital open, and as a community we need to ensure they remain open. This is the right move forward,” the Mayor said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who supported the event, and give an even bigger shout out to the event’s sponsors.”

Lois Thurecht, from Kingaroy QCWA, said QCWA members were also very happy to be able to support the community hospital.

It was an important facility that meant many people could get treated locally rather than make the long trip to Toowoomba or Brisbane to visit specialists.

Both QCWA branches thought the community hospital was a very worthwhile recipient for this year’s Luncheon Hall efforts.

The money will be used by the Hospital Foundation to buy equipment that will help attract even more specialists to begin practising at the hospital.
