Mobile phones are only one of the distractions that cause crashes

August 22, 2016

Queensland Police are marking Road Safety Week with a daily campaign highlighting key causes of motor vehicle crashes.

Officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, said Monday’s topic was “Distractions”.

“People need to concentrate on their driving so that they drive safely each and every time,” Snr Sgt Frank said.

“If they are not paying attention to what is happening on the road in front of them, they are much more likely to be involved in an incident.”

Common distractions include mobile phone use – including texting – which is illegal and attracts stiff penalties.

Drivers should also be aware of other common distractions:

  • Passengers and children in vehicles
  • Adjusting the stereo or radio
  • Eating and drinking while driving
  • Using a sat nav

“Distracted drivers can be charged with failing to have proper control of a vehicle, or driving without due care and attention,” Snr Sgt Frank said.

“Distracted drivers can run into vehicles in front of them, or go straight through road signs or red lights without stopping.

“Being distracted also increases a driver’s reaction time.”
