A South Burnett man suffered critical head injuries, and two other people were also injured, in a collision at Benarkin on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash site, on the corner of Old Esk Road and the D’Aguilar Highway, about 3:30pm.

The seriously injured man, aged in his mid-20s, had to be cut free from the wreckage of one of the vehicles before being flown by RACQ LifeFlight helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

A LifeFlight spokesperson said the car the man was travelling in was struck at speed when it turned into the path of another vehicle while leaving the highway.

The front of both vehicles was seriously damaged.

The helicopter was called to the scene at 3:45pm and landed on the highway to assist the injured man.

The LifeFlight medical team worked with paramedics to stabilise the man for transport.

Two other people were taken by road ambulance to Kingaroy Hospital.

The D’Aguilar Highway was reduced to one lane as emergency crews worked at the scene.

A police spokesman said the Forensic Crash Unit would be investigating the cause of the incident.
