The South Burnett Regional Council will scale back the number of public functions it holds after July to make room for the Lady Bjelke-Petersen Community Hospital to conduct its own fundraising events.

South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell said in recent years the Council had run a number of public fundraisers for the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund.

These included Charity Golf Days, the Mayor’s Gala Charity Ball and similar events.

Mayor Campbell said now the community hospital had re-opened, the hospital’s Board would probably be looking at doing some fundraising itself, and he thought the Council should make room for them to do this.

“We will still support many regular public events such as the Heritage Bank Nanango Film Festival, the Australia Day Awards and Anzac Day commemorations,” the Mayor said.

However, he thought there was only a limited pool for fundraising, so it would be better if this field was left clear for the hospital board’s efforts.

He also thought doing this would open the door for more community involvement in any hospital fundraising drive.

The Mayor said the number and type of functions the Council will run next year will form part of this year’s Budget discussions.

The Council’s 2016-17 Budget is set to be brought down towards the end of the month.
