South Burnett residents have been quizzing Cr Damien Tessmann about all the roadwork that’s been happening in Venman Street, Kingaroy, but they should relax, it’s not being paid for out of the $50 per quarter road levy.
The Venman Street repairs are costing $200,000 but the cost is coming out of Council’s regular capital expenditure budget.
Cr Tessmann said the pavement on the residential street had been basically falling apart because of damage caused by subsoil water damage over the years.
He said Venman Street emphasised the importance of Council’s regular road resealing program.
People sometimes complained when they saw work being done to reseal streets that at first glance looked okay.
However, this regular cycle of resealing stopped the sort of damage that had been allowed to develop in past years in Venman Street.
Cr Tessmann said workers had dug down into the street to allow the water to dry out and a new road base to be laid. Kerbing and channelling would then be installed along with a new bitumen pavement surface.
Venman Street has been kept trafficable during the work to allow access to local residents and emergency vehicles.
The work is expected to take about eight weeks.
Footnote: Venman Street is named after George Venman, an accountant who was the first Shire Clerk in the Kingaroy Shire Council. George’s son Jack donated the land in Brisbane that now forms the much-loved Venman Bushland National Park.
