A South Burnett rural fire crew in action during a controlled burn

The Rural Fire Service is looking for volunteers who want to play an important role in the community, and it’s not just firefighters they’re after.

RFSQ North Coast Regional Manager Peter Hollier said the Service needed all types of people, with a wide range of skills, to “be part of something bigger” and keep brigades running and communities safe.

“We are now looking for new members to join the Rural Fire Brigades across the North Coast,” Mr Hollier said.

“These brigades need a boost to their current membership numbers and would like to hear from anyone who may be interested in volunteering.”

Mr Hollier said joining the RFSQ was a great way to get involved in the community and offered fantastic opportunities for self-development.

“As a member of a Rural Fire Brigade, you have the opportunity to not only help protect your community but master new skills through the wide variety of training available to you,” he said.

“RFSQ volunteers can also be deployed across Queensland to assist during fires, floods and storms.”

Mr Hollier said there was a general perception the main task of rural volunteers was fighting fires, but in reality there was much more to the role.

“We have volunteers actively involved in community education, fundraising, administration, incident management, communication and catering,” he said.

“Positions range from operational roles, including firefighter, first officer and brigade officer, through to non-operational roles including chairperson, secretary and volunteer community educator.

“Whether you are an active firefighter, or undertaking another role, your contribution will make a difference.”
