May 3, 2014:

Most clubs are now well advanced with their Club Championships, and the weather is quickly sorting out the players from the stayers.

There are slow greens some days after heavy dew, and fast greens running 16 or better on cloudless days with sun.

So it pays to keep an eye on the weather.

Anyway, Kingaroy heads our bulletin today:

This weekend is a big one in Yarraman: it’s the club’s annual Pines Carnival.

The first weekend in May used to be a long weekend and Yarraman always filled the green on three days.

But now that it’s only two days, this has upset the travel arrangements of some of the regular but far-distant clubs who usually attend.

Some keen players have already had a practice run to check out the time of the green.

I’ve heard it could be a little slower with 26mm of rain falling in the past few days.

And it was a chilly 9 degrees this morning with maybe a bit of frost too … so we’ll all just have to wait and see.

Nanango news:

What’s been happening in Nanango?

Well, Ben Pratap will be getting his name on the Honour Board this year as A Grade Champion.

In the Final last week he downed Jim Fowler in fairly convincing fashion 25-18 – well done Ben!

Championship Pairs matches were also played, with these results:

  • Bob Hammond and Bob Hall def Trevor George and Mike Wyvill 19-15
  • Jim Fowler and Brian Havell def Nev Lawrence and Cec Bracken 29-19
  • Ben Pratap and Glen Yeates def Lew Saunders and Athol Jensen 23-13

Wednesday was Ladies Trophy Day, and Doris Drew, Sylvia Fanning, Evelyn Jensen and Glen Yeates defeated Lew Saunders, Ben Pratap and Athol Jensen 23-11

Anzac Day (we missed out on those results last week):

  • Bob Hammond, Evelyn Jensen and Sue Tucker def. Sylvia Fanning, Muriel Benfield and Ben Pratap 30-12
  • Di McNeilage and Brian Havell def Bernie Coyne and Allan Ward 24-13
  • Lew Saunders and Greg Pogson def Julie Saunders and Trevor George 31-18

Social bowls have been quite popular, with a big roll-up the other day.

Bob Hammond and Greg Pogson topped the leader board with 17 points.

In the Men’s Social last Tuesday, a match of interest was Keith Carroll and Ed Haycock def Joe Aglizzio and Neil Drew 22-18;

Esk news:

The Easter break was an excellent opportunity for some maintenance work on the green, which was then closed due to the chemical residue.

Last Sunday was the Gatton social round robin, which is played between Durack-Inala, Mt Crosby and of course Gatton and Esk. In May, Esk hosts the round robin on Sunday 18th.

Last week, Pearlie Jenkins successfully defended her Ladies Single title when she defeated Kay Thomson 27-16.

Frank Hussey defeated Vicki Cameron 25-16 in the Open singles championship game

Barefoot bowls on Thursday nights has now finished for the season with the dew now becoming quite heavy at night time.

Howwever the club is canvassing the idea of starting afternoon barefoot bowls on Saturdays as an alternative.
