April 26, 2014:

My online column is a little late this week because I wanted to include the latest news about yesterday’s Anzac Day competitions. I hope the slight delay won’t inconvenience regular readers.

On the bright side, the beautiful autumn weather has been continuing and playing conditions on the greens have been pretty good.

There’s been a lot of action, too.

So let’s get into this week’s report:

Kingaroy news:

The big news this week is that Kingaroy have completed their Club Championship Singles.

The match was played between Phil Kemp and Richie Patterson last Sunday and a good crowd was on hand to watch this much-anticipated match, with the winner being the first to score 25.

This was a match that kept the gallery on its toes.

Patterson won the first two ends, but Kemp won the next two and went to a lead of 7 to 4.

After this, there was tight bowling for the next nine ends – single shots – and Kemp still led 12-9.

The game continued to remain tight, and although the lead changed a number of times by the 19th end the score was 16-all.

And by end 25, Patterson had regained the lead 22 to 19.

Things changed a bit after that, though.

Kemp won end 26 by 2 shots and end 27 by 4 shots to take out the Championship 25 to 22.

A great game from a very in-form pair of players!

Yarraman news:

Kerry Knowles, Robbie Douglass and Bill Holmes
Marker Kerry Knowles checks the score card with players Robbie Douglass and Bill Holmes in the Men’s A Singles Quarter Final

Another match in the A Grade singles played on Anzac Day and what a match it was: Robbie Douglass versus Bill Holmes.

Douglass won the toss and sent Holmes in “to bat”.

Bill won the first two ends 3 and 2 and it was an uphill battle from there.

There was a big gallery, and many comments on the number of tight ends, with most of them going down to close measures.

At 15 ends, Holmes led 21-9 and as he said at the time “the last point is always the hardest to win”.

When the wind dropped, Douglass scored a four and a three in consecutive ends.

But Holmes rallied and finally took out the match in 24 ends – 26-18 – to much applause from the gallery.

Kev Profke, Leo Robinson and Sandra Currell
Winners of the Anzac Shield at Yarraman bowls on Anzac Day: Kev Profke, Leo Robinson and Sandra Currell; not only did they win the Shield, they also won a presentation pack of Anzac Biscuits

One of the highlights of Anzac Day in Yarraman is the annual Anzac Shield competition, and this year the Yarraman Ladies Club hosted the Shield tournament.

The Anzac Shield was presented by Dudley and Cynthia Brown.

This well-crafted artefact was the work of the former President of the Yarraman Club, Dudley Brown.

In 2002, Dudley worked through the night to complete the Shield for competiton, but tragically passed away the next day before the competition took place.

So the Shield is a now a memorial to him, and it acknowledges the role of the armed forces – navy, army and airforce – in the struggles of WWII.

It features a plaque depicting the “Medway Queen”, the Churchill VII tank and the Vickers Wellington MKIII bomber.

Here’s some infpormation about them:

  • The PS Medway Queen was a paddle driven steamship, the only mobile estuary paddle steamer left in the UK. She was one of the “little ships of Dunkirk”, making a record 7 trips to rescue 7000 men in the Dunkirk evacuation.
  • The Churchill VII is a British tier 6 heavy tank, and the first vehicles of this type were produced just before the Allied landing in Normandy. The Mk. VII had the capability to set up deadly blockades at key points of the map, lead attacks, and provide withering support fire.
  • The Vickers Wellington Mk.III, meanwhile, was two-engine medium bomber and torpedo bomber. The Mk.III had its armor reinforced and all its fuel tanks were self-sealing

This year’s competition for the Shield was one game of triples.

Members of the Currell family have – at times – had their names recorded as winners, and this year new player Sandra Currell was the lead in the winning team, which also comprised skip Kev Profke and Leo Robinson.

They defeated family members Neil Currell, Di Currell and Margaret Willoughby 28-9, 12 ends to 6.

Other results of interest:

  • Runners-up: Bev Profke, Alison Anderson and Keith Carroll defeated Horst Myer, Glenda Wolski amd Eunice Smith 23-10, 11 ends to 7
  • Nev Lawence, Todd Currell and Roy Wrembeck (on count-back) defeated Ivy Wrembeck, John Beattie and Lola Harper 18-17, 9 ends each.
