Now that the holiday season is over, the action is starting to heat up in regional bowls.

Carnivals are starting, inter-club competitions are getting underway at several venues and keen bowlers have no lack of opportunities for great games.

Here’s a run-down of what’s been happening.

Gayndah news:

Gayndah had a huge weekend at their Men’s Fours Carnival last weekend, with 16 teams competing for $3600 in prize money.

Teams came from Urunga (NSW), Cunnamulla, Taroom, Kilcoy, Miriamvale, Sunshine Coast, Maryborough, Urangan, Kingaroy and Binjour, as well as local teams.

Scoring was wins plus margins (wins to count in the event of a tie), aggregate score – then ends.

  • Winners were Rob Patterson, Neil Ferris, Ashley Harris and Peter Bennett (Gayndah) – 4 wins plus 38
  • Second round: Peter Stevenson, Cec Roberts, S. Patch and G. Bogert (Maryborough) – 3 wins + draw 37
  • Third round: Alwyn Litzow, Greg Yeates, Kerry Smith and Ewen O’Rourke (Kingaroy) – 3 wins plus draw 31
  • Fourth round: Dallas Jackson, Ian Daniels, Frank Coleman and John Woodcroft (Cunnamulla) – 3 wins plus draw 7.
  • Saturday Winners: Ray Curry, Craig Curry, Steve Myers and Brian Prygoda (Binjour) – 3 wins plus draw 37.
  • Sunday Last Round: Kev Miller, Dozer Bechly, Stumpy and Barry Gough (Kilcoy) – 2 wins minus 8

Nanango news:

Last Saturday, the first round of the hotly contested Nanango versus Yarraman Self Selected Triples was played at Nanango.

Conditions of play were 2 for an end and 5 for a win:

  • John Harwood, Delvin Powys and Warren Arthur 46 def Chris McLeod, John Beattie and Jim LeCocq 40
  • Doreen Fitch, Daphne Stewart and Merv Fitch 38 def Joe Aglizzio, Lew Saunders and Trevor George 35
  • Bev Profke, Kev Profke and Helene Johnson 33 def Kay Dugdell, George Wolski and Brian Dugdell 31

Today the return match for this round is being played in Yarraman.

Last Friday – in Scroungers – Trevor George was way in front with 135

News from Yarraman:

The ladies bowls season is off to a good start, with six rinks in action on Wednesday for a Pairs competition

Conditions were one game of 21 ends with 2 for an end and 3 for a win.

Helene Johnson and Roy Wrembeck wound up the winners. They defeated Daphne Stewart and Tom Johnson 26-17.

Points scored were not given (in fact I don’t have the points for any of the games).

Runners-up were Horst Meyer and Glenda Wolski, who defeated Nev Lawrence and Alison Anderson 26-13

Other scores:

  • John Moore and Eunice Smith def Jim LeCocq and Lola Harper 18-16
  • Neil Currell and Jenny Moore def Kev Profke and Ron Lucas 21-18
  • Brian Dugdell and John Beattie def Charlie Ogilvie and Leo Robinson 32-17

Thursday night of last week saw a good roll-up too.

Kev Profke, Tom Clarke and Kenny Walsh turned up trumps when they defeated Kerry Knowles, Eunice Smith and Todd Currell 21-13.

Next best were Alison Anderson, Marge Clarke and Sandra Currell who defeated Bev Profke, Arthur Smith and Kerry Walsh 20-11.

And in the Sunday Social:

  • Rob Douglass and Bev Profke def Kev Profke and Di Currell 24-14
  • Neil Currell, Margaret Willoughby and Sandra Currell def Alison Anderson, Todd and Maddie Currell 21-8

Tansey tales:

Last Friday night in Social Bowls:

  • Winners: Greg Breitkreutz, Michael Litfin and Lindsay Quinn – a score of 13
  • Runners Up: David Banbury, Jenny Breitkreutz and Tracey Litfin – score of 9

The next night bowls is set down for Friday 7th March. There’ll be a barbecue at 6.00pm, followed by bowls at 7.00pm.

Esk news:

Esk is travelling well.

Last week I mentioned their very successful Pub Day with teams from Toogoolawah, Lowood, Laidley, RAAF Amberley, Dureack-Inala, North Ipswich and – of course – Esk.

  • First round winners: Don Schimke’s Lowood team
  • Second round winners: Bill Percy’s Gatton team

The next Pub Day is April 15.

On Wednesday, one match of interest was an early game in the club’s Singles, where Rob Buckworth defeated Allan Cameron 26-13.

And on Sunday in Mixed Social Bowls, the winners were Pam, Allan, Vicki, John and visitor Bob.

Tomorrow Esk play at Durack-Inala in the first round of the Social Round Robin for 2014.

And there’ll be Barefoot Bowls on Thursday night.

Kilcoy had a great day on Tuesday with thirty-eight players on the green:

  • Terry Pratten, John Worrall and Bill Edwards def John House. Bert Christie and John Glanville 28-17 .
  • Peter, Dave Scott and Sharon Walker def Col Ferguson, Brett Kelly and Michael Dunn 24-8
  • Kelly Charters, Graham and Leigh Irwin def Maxine, Adam Kelly and Jenny Edwards 21-12
  • Daryl, Coffee Bob and Denis Thompson def Flora Kelly, Liz Frawley and Pauline Lawson 16-9
  • Phyllis Coffee, Nelly Herbert and Marg Dahl def Kim Donovan, Dave Boyd, Kathy Hill and Noel Lanes 17-15

There was also a 15-all draw on rink 6, when Fay Vicary, Ann Pope and Pam Taylor drew with Ernie Herbert, Margaret Worrall and Jeff Welden,

Star of the Green Ernie Herbert was defeated by Sharon Walker 4-3.

The next match will be on February 25.

The first round of the Webster Shield will be held at Toogoolawah on March 2.

And next Tuesday will be Ferguson/Worrall Trophy Day, with great prizes.
