South Burnett Regional Council is hoping to give families in need some Christmas cheer thanks to the generosity of donations from Council staff and South Burnett residents.
Throughout December, Council will support the Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign ‘Give Hope This Christmas & Help Change Lives” by collecting non-perishable food items.
“My hat goes off to Council’s staff for yet again organising a collection this year,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.
“Sharing a Christmas meal with your family is part of what makes Christmas. We have families in this region who will struggle to put a meal on the table and the Salvation Army’s appeal makes this happen and we are proud to support it.
“It is a part of the Christmas spirit that community supports each other to ensure all families in our region have a Christmas that is celebrated with a special meal on Christmas day.”
Each year the Salvation Army seeks assistance by asking for donations of non-perishable food items.
This includes plum puddings, Christmas cakes, tins of ham, cans of vegetables or packet foods. These items are packaged and handed to families and individuals who are unable to buy these items.
“If you would like to support these families, please consider donating non-perishable food items or alternatively, donating supermarket gift vouchers, which will give the people the option of choosing foods their families enjoy eating,” SBRC Community and Cultural Services co-ordinator Michael Hunter said.
Donations can be dropped into Council’s Customer Service Centres by Thursday, December 19, to deliver to the local Salvation Army Office that afternoon.
A second way that South Burnett residents can help the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal is by making donations at Zarly Anne’s Tone & Tan at Shop 12, 119 Youngman Street in Kingaroy.
Zarly Anne’s is collecting non-perishable foods for the appeal, which can be left under the Christmas Tree in Studio 1.
Last year, Zarly Anne’s collected more than 400kg of food for the Salvos, and owner Zarly Steffensen hopes to exceed that target this year.
All collected foodstuffs will be delivered to the local Salvation Army headquarters before Christmas for distribution.
