Excavation work currently being undertaken in Kingaroy’s Memorial Park is to repair flood damage and better prepare the area for any future inundation.
A South Burnett Regional Council spokesman told southburnett.com.au that the vertical walls along the sides of the drain had been damaged in the January floods.
A reader last week submitted photographs of the cracked walls which had collapsed into part of the the drain.
The Council spokesman said the vertical walls would be replaced by walls with a more sloping angle.
This should also increase the capacity of the drains to carry away heavy water flows.
Truckloads of soil were being removed from the area at the weekend.
The work is expected to take about a fortnight to finish.
