What’s been happening on the bowling greens around our part of South East Queensland over the last week?

Well, most centres have reported an inch or two of rain.

In fact, one old timer in Yarraman said that he could not remember the green looking so green.

Looks like the serious bowlers will be down early to do a speed check!

Anyway, let’s lead off with Kingaroy – and what a great week-end they had.

It was their Annual Men’s Carnival – pairs and fours – with the Men’s Pairs competition on Friday, and five rounds of fours on Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday, 28 teams from throughout South East Queensland took part in the Men’s Pairs. Three games were played by each team and the winners were decided by number of games won and ends won.

  • Winners: Ian McCracken, John Jardine (Bundaberg) – 3 wins, 38 1/2 ends
  • Runners Up: Steve Carland, Phil Kemp (Kingaroy) – 3 wins 34 1/2 ends
  • Third: Bruce Kelly, Greg Mooney (Caboolture) – 3 Wins, 33 ends.
  • Fourth (on a countback): Danny Holligan, Richie Patterson. (Kingaroy) – 3 wins 31 1/2 ends
  • Fifth (the losers of the countback): Garry Dan, Jack Horne, (Kandanga) – 3 wins 31 1/2 ends.

On Saturday and Sunday, 26 teams participated in Open Fours – that’s 104 players on the green, a big event!

Teams came from as far away as Quilpie. And while I didn’t see the man from Snowy River, I think he was the only one missing.

Each team played 5 games of 18 ends, with the winners determined by number of games won plus the total of ends won.

  • Winners: Kandanga – Greg Maher, Jeff Worth, Garry Dan, Jack Horne – 4 wins, 1 Draw, 53 1/2 ends
  • Runners Up: Gladstone/Kingaroy – Greg Schulz, Geoff Gees, Kerry Smith, Tony Leggio – 4 wins 55 1/2 ends
  • Third: Bundaberg/Goomeri – John Jardine, B. Kunde Snr. Ian McCracken, B. Kunde Jnr – 4 wins 55 ends
  • Fourth: Toowoomba/Kingaroy – Danny Holligan, Chris Barrett, Gary Gray, Graham Kath – 4 wins 50 ends
  • Fifth: Caboolture Lakes – I. Ascroft, J. Cowan, L. Hamilton, J. Blandford – 4 wins 49 ends
  • Sixth: Hamilton – Wally Schmidt, Jason Moore, Ray McKay, Sean Baker – 3 wins, 1 draw 49 ends
  • Seventh: Caboolture – Glen Smith, Lew Lines, Jeff McPherson, Mark Davis – 3 wins 1 draw 45 1/2 ends
  • Eighth: Kilcoy/Kingaroy – Col Kratzmann, Alan Wright, Dozer Bechley, Evan Lowry – 3 wins 48 ends

As I said – a great weekend.

Congratulations to Kingaroy and well done Geoff Clutterbuck for getting results collated and away to the media.

But wait – there’s more!

Thursday Triples, with winners determined by the largest winning margin.

  • Winners: Dave Clinker, Filipe Munoz, Ray Maclaren with a winning margin of 12.
  • Runners Up (on a countback): Harry Read, Bob Hall, Col Kratzmann with a winning margin of 10

Ray Maclaren’s winning score deserves a mention – Dave Clinker, Filipe Munoz, Ray Maclaren 27 def. Dave Woods, Craig Boundy, Graham Heaton 15

To Esk:

Our media rep Kay had such a busy couple of weeks that she is taking a holiday.

But her bulletin starts off by saying “visits, visiting, festivities”.

So what has happened at Esk in the past week or so? Well, here’s a thumbnail run-down:

  • Burnett District Ladies three days visit to Esk, Gatton and Rosewood
  • Melbourne Cup day – three spiders and a corner to corner
  • November 6 and 9 – Mixed social bowls
  • Sunday 10 – Thirty bowlers from Ipswich Veterans
  • Next weekend – off to Mt Crosby for their 58th birthday celebrations
  • Last Tuesday – the final Pub Day for 2013.

And tomorrow caps off a great fortnight with the State-wide “Come and Try Bowls Day”

Today in Kilcoy’s “Chaplaincy Barefoot Bowls Day”, which raises money to keep the Chaplaincy program going at our local schools.

And tomorrow it’s “Come ‘n’ Try Day”, where anyone is welcome to come and see what bowls is all about.

There’s a gold coin donation involved, which will be donated the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation, and both days are a great community effort by Kilcoy Bowls.

Then on Tuesday, it’s Alma Turner Trophy Day sponsored by Denise and Tony Grey. This will be a great program – spiders – touchers – and there’ll be great trophy prizes.

And one for the calendar: Saturday, December 7 – Member’s Fun Day which will consist of members playing friendly games of bowls and pool, followed by dinner and Trophy Presentations.

There should be a trophy a good set of bowls notes – thanks Margaret.
