What a week it has been! Last weekend was the Clocktown Invitation Fours at Goomeri, six rounds of 16 ends.

On Saturday, it was rotational triples, Nanango versus Yarraman at Yarraman – a real state of origin contest.

And Esk was off to Mt Crosby for their round robin matches against four other clubs; and the Burnett District Ladies triples championships at Gayndah – just some of the happenings this week.

Let’s start with Goomeri. Their two-day invitation fours attracted 14 teams – three rounds on Saturday – three rounds on Sunday – 16 ends.

Winners were decided on wins plus winning margins.

Saturday’s winners: Alwyn Litzow’s Wondai team with three wins plus 35
Sunday winners:  Merv Fitch, from Yarraman, with two wins plus 18.

A run down of overall winners (it was a case of horses for courses) with Goomeri taking two of the three major trophies.

Winning team – Brian Kunde Jnr with six wins plus 74. His team included Bevan Kunde Snr, Ian McCracken and John Jardine
Runner-up – Ron King’s Kingaroy four – five wins plus 32; and third,– Beven Sippell (Goomeri) four wins plus 42.

Goomeri is sending a contingent to Tansey for the Blue Gums today and tomorrow – Pairs today and mixed fours tomorrow.

It will be a big day at Goomeri next Sunday when Glen Maudsley hosts the President’s Day Men’s fours – two games of 18 ends.

One of the most keenly fought competitions in the South Burnett is interclub three bowls triples played twice a month between Yarraman and Nanango.

It is played on the first Saturday in the month at Nanango and the third Saturday in the month at Yarraman. Two games of 12 ends – finish on the bell. Two points for an end win – five points for game win.

Nanango currently hold bragging rights and they comfortably retained their title last Saturday in Yarraman:

Winners – Warren Arthur’s team, which included Doris Drew and John Harwood, scored 40 points.

Second was Yarraman’s team comprising Neil Currell, Di Currell and Robbie Douglass, 38 points.

Third was Nanango, Trevor Ward’s team – Trev played with Greg and Josh Pogson. They scored 35 points.

Nanango’s total is 75 points, Yarraman 38.

Yarraman Pub Day is next Thursday with an 11:00am start,  tw0 games of 13 ends. Green fees include lunch mid-game.

What’s happening in Peranga.

More to the point, what is happening with Peranga? This great friendly club is struggling with membership numbers and the Ladies club is facing closure.

Their annual Rose Bowl competition each October is one of the “must do” tournaments in this part of South-East Queensland.

This year’s Rose Bowl is on next Thursday. Mixed fours – two rounds of 18 ends. Morning tea at 8:15am with play starting at 9:30am. And, of course, lunch and afternoon tea, all very social.

Thursday’s event is being billed as a farewell to the Ladies Club, so you should be there. It is a beautiful green.

There will also be a memorial day for Tuppy Gscheidle on Saturday, October 26. It is a fund raiser for CareFlight who do a marvellous job flying patients to urgent medical treatment.

Kingaroy News  (always plenty happening in Kingaroy):
Cheap Tuesday is still proving popular: Darcy Munro, Maree Millard, Bob Robinson 20 defeated Brigitt Kung, Kev Raffin, Alan Irwin 7; Dave Barwick, Greg Schulz 17 defeated Peter Neilsen, Erris Vale 12; Ray Maclaren, Bruce Johnston 15 defeated Irene Smith, Kerry Smith 11

On Thursday – Selected Triples (6 points for a win plus 1 point for each end won). Twenty-four players lined up for this one.

Winners Jim Czislowski, Des Richards, Ray Maclaren 22 defeasted Glad Slatter, Irene Smith, Hugh Harrison 13

The Men’s B Grade Pairs semis and finals will be played tomorrow. The semi-final starts at 9:00am and the final at 1:00pm.

One that you should have in your diary next weekend is the Mixed Fours Carnival. Twenty-eight teams from throughout south-east Queensland will be taking part over the two days.

Jackpot Pairs ( always a favourite in Kingaroy) two bowl pairs, with teams playing two games of 18 ends, and the winners determined by the team with most wins and the largest combined winning margin.

Sixteen teams competed last Sunday. The winners were Des Richards, John Coppard, 2 wins plus 27 margin. Runners-up: Maureen and Phil Kemp, wins plus 20 margin. jackpot number was 30. As there was no winner, it should be worth winning next month.

A big weekend at Tansey this weekend for their Annual Blue Gums Carnival!

Today there will be two games of pairs and tomorrow four games of rinks. The green will be full on both days so it would be worth going up to watch. Full results here next weekend.

Esk – what’s been happening there?

Esk is part of a group of five which includes Durack, Inala, Gatton and Mt Crosby.

Each month, from February to November, they play round robins so each club hosts two matches a year.

Last weekend Esk travelled to Mt Crosby for what must be described as a fun day – players in fancy dress and randomly drawn into teams. It was a fun day, so we won’t go into scores .

News from Toogoolawah.

Last Monday was the last event for 2013 on the Ladies’ Calendar: Fred Fern’s trophy Day with a nice raffle prize and a substantial voucher from Fred Fern’s Bowls Store.

Visiting teams from Lowood, Gatton, the Eskapees from Esk and Yarraman played 21 ends and enjoyed a barbecue lunch. Conditions of play were ends plus margins and these conditions not announced until play finished (that’s one way of stopping burglars isn’t it?)

One of the home teams took out the trophy with 41 points – Dot McVeigh, Dougie Bitossi, Lenny Smyth and Noel (Macca) McLennan.
Runner-up were the Eskapees – Martin Bail, Peter Stephens, Rod Hedges, Georgie Russell.
Wooden spooners were Toogoolawah – Norie Norwood, Ricky Downes, Marie Thompkins, and Evelyn Tilley.

On Thursday two teams played at Amberley for Veterans’ Day. Eighteen ends with other clubs from the West Moreton District. No luck for Toogoolawah but they reported that it was a fun day.

While the cats were away the mice played – social play back home at Toogoolawah. Twelve ends were played on a very hot day.

A score of interest was Mel Wlazly, Ian Bradow, Lenny Smith defeated Mim Heath, Colleen Heath and Aileen Byrne quite comfortably.

Another game in the Mixed Pairs Championships today: Marion Deane and Tyrone Richter play Kim Dorman and Hartley Johnstone.

Tomorrow is the last Sunday in the month so it is half price Sunday. That should draw the crowd , and on Thursday, Night Bowls starts at 4:00pm with a light tea all for $6.
