The South Burnett Regional Council presented $109,000 in cash and in-kind grants to almost 70 community organisations at its second annual Community Assistance Funding presentation night this evening.
The funding, which represents “annualised” support budgeted by the Council for community groups and recurring events, was handed over in individual cheques to representatives from the groups who gathered at Kingaroy Town Hall.
Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said the evening was all about “recognising what great work people do in our community”.
In his opening address, the Mayor said that Australia currently had a Federal Government almost $500 billion in debt and a State Government more than $80 billion in debt.
This had led to the South Burnett Regional Council’s own grants funding being cut as both tiers of Government tried to reign in spending, which in turn had forced the Council to slash costs wherever it could.
However, one area where the council had no intention of making cuts was in its annual grants to local community groups.
“You people and your committees work very hard to bring great things to all our communities, and without you we wouldn’t have any real community at all,” he said.
“When we looked at areas where we could make savings, this was one area that didn’t get more than a second’s thought.”
In addition to the $109,000 in cash and in-kind contributions, the Council will also be giving $241,662 in rate remissions and rate exemptions to community organisations around the region this year, bringing its total support for community groups to almost $351,000.
Recipients of this year’s grants included school awards nights, Christmas Carnivals, hall committees, show societies, sporting groups, festival committees, and charities.
The council also took the opportunity of the evening to distribute cheques to groups which had applied for its bi-annual Community Assistance funding round.
Rounds are decided in February and August.
This last round, the Mayor said, the Council had received 16 applications for $47,000 of assistance in total, but only had $13,000 to distribute.
A special Elite Performance grant of $1500 was given to St Mary’s Catholic College to assist with the costs of sending six students to the All Schools National Futsal Championships in Sydney.
