The by-election to fill the vacant councillor’s position in Division 6 of the South Burnett Regional Council will be held on September 7 … unless the Federal Election gets called on that date.

And in good news for voters, Council CEO Ken McLoughlin confirmed today the ballot would be conducted by post which means voters won’t have to front up to a polling station.

The Queensland Electoral Commission will post ballot slips to all eligible voters within the Division.

Mr McLoughlin said the only hitch could occur if Prime Minister Kevin Rudd decides to hold the Federal Election on the same date.

If this occurred, the Council by-election would be postponed to a date to be fixed.

The vacancy in Division 6 – which covers most of the former Wondai Shire – was created when Cr Cheryl Dalton resigned earlier this month.

The timetable for the election is:

  • The electoral roll for Division 6 voters will close at 5:00pm on Friday, August 2.
  • Nominations for the vacant position will close at noon the following Friday, August 9.
  • Ballot materials will be sent to voters through the mail after the close of nominations.
  • Votes will start being counted on Saturday, September 7.
  • However final postal votes will be accepted up until Tuesday, September 17.
