Police are investigating a serious single vehicle traffic crash which occurred on the D’Aguilar Highway near Coolabunia on Friday night.

About 8:25pm a sedan was travelling southbound when it is believed it overtook another vehicle and then lost control and crashed into several trees, and then a drain.

The two men inside the vehicle were both taken to Kingaroy Hospital.

The 31-year-old male driver was later airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

A 17-year-old Booie man was treated at Kingaroy Hospital but is not believed to have any serious injuries.

The highway was blocked for more than a hour.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

SES volunteers monitoring the Bunya Highway road closure north of Wooroolin were forced to contend last night with cantankerous motorists demanding to be let through.

Even though the road was clearly marked as “Closed”, drivers were ignoring the signs and dangerous conditions and driving across the flooded bitumen.

One driver is believed to have lost control and skidded, causing more headaches for the emergency crews on the scene.

Police have been monitoring the highway today to ensure no more drivers put their lives at risk.

The latest word from the South Burnett Regional Council is that the road will be inspected at 7:00am tomorrow.

Note: This is the first time in living memory that water from the Wooroolin Wetlands has spilled onto the highway to block traffic.
