57th Annual Proston Show
The 57th annual Proston Show will be held at Proston Showgrounds on the Proston-Boondooma Road just west of town from 8:00am this morning through until around 10:00pm tonight. The Proston Show is always a big event in the western South Burnett and beef cattle will be a particular focus today because Rockhampton isn't far away, Today's activities will get underway with horse-riding events, stud cattle judging and competitions for junior judges and young handlers shortly after the gates open. This will be followed a Championship Dog Show kicking off at around 8:30am; and then with show jumping, poultry judging and prime trade cattle judging at 9:00am. Then at 9:30am there'll be wood-chopping and post-ripping, including the famous Proston Post-Ripping Challenge that's always fun to see. This will be followed at 11:00am with the presentation of the Prime Trade Show Awards, and then the Proston Stockman's Classic at noon. The official opening and Miss Showgirl presentation will be held at 1:30pm and this will be followed by the Grand Parade at 2:00pm along with more award presentations, including Stud Beef Grand Champion. Other great things to look out for at this year's Show include Viv and Maurie's Shearing Shed with bottle-feeding of lambs; pavilion displays; sideshow rides; clown shows; and a Whip-Cracking Competition and demos at 4:00pm. In the evening there'll also be live entertainment provided by DJ Hams (including open karaoke from 7:00pm) and up and coming country soloist Bridget O'Shannessy, plus a Giant Fireworks Show at 7:00pm. In addition, the Show Society will be running a canteen, BBQ and bar from 10:00am onwards. Admission to today's Show is $10 for adults, $5 for high school students and $3 for primary school students (under-5s are admitted free). 19th Annual Yarraman Horse Ride
The Yarraman Agricultural Society's 19th Annual Yarraman Horse Ride will be held in and around Yarraman today. The Ride is the second-biggest in the region (the other is the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride) and this year's event will feature two trails around the Yarraman district: a 20km ride and a 30km ride. The rides will leave the Showgrounds around 7:30am and return at around 4:45pm. In the evening, and they'll be followed by a programme of live entertainment which will run from 7:00pm until around midnight, along with meals and a bar. Admission to the Ride is $20 (which includes the evening entertainment programme) and there'll be overnight camping facilities and hot showers available at the Showgrounds too, including a burger dinner on Friday night; breakfast and dinner on Saturday; and a recovery breakfast on Sunday morning. Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and routinely attract 320 to 420 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Alfie Langer Dinner - Kumbia
The Kumbia Hotel will be hosting a special dinner for "The Little General" Alfie Langer at 6:00pm this evening. This will be a pig-on-a-spit get-together and tickets are $30 per head for adults, $15 for children (under 7s are free). They can be booked by phoning the hotel on (07) 4164-4111.
Art Exhibition Opening - Kingaroy
After being closed for renovations during February, the Kingaroy Art Gallery in Haly Street (opposite the peanut silos) will be opening their March exhibition with a wine and cheese tasting at 10:30am this morning. This month the gallery will be featuring "Tole'd by Paper" by well-known Kingaroy paper tole artist Rosemarie Matthews-Frederick in the main gallery, along with some works executed by her students. And in Gallery 2, it will be showcasing "Unclaimed and Unknown Art", a quirky exhibition of artworks that were recently "rediscovered" during a clean-up of the Gallery's stockroom. Meanwhile, Gallery 3 will be providing information about the "Dual Arts: Art Versus Photography" project currently being undertaken in the region by artist Lee Porter and photographer Sherrianne Talon, along with forms which will allow visitors to nominate iconic South Burnett sites they'd like to see included in this unique venture. After this morning's opening all three exhibitions will remain on display from 9:00am to 4:30pm on weekdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm on weekends until March 28. South Burnett Woodcrafters - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Woodcrafters will be holding their regular Saturday morning meeting at their clubhouse, which is located behind the Kingaroy Visitor Information Centre in Haly Street from 8:00am to around mid-day today. Saturday Cricket
The fifteenth round of the South Burnett's A Grade cricket competition will be played in Nanango and Murgon today. It's the last A grade round before the semi-finals (which will be held next week), so teams will be particularly keen to score a win. In Nanango, the home team will play Wondai at the Nanango Cricket Grounds; and in Murgon, the home team will play Warriors at the Murgon Cricket Grounds in Macalister Street. Meanwhile, in the Semi Final of this year's B Grade competition, the mighty Kumbia Rattlers will take on the equally mighty Murgon Colts in what promises to be a very interesting match. Finally, the U12s and U14s Junior Cricket Finals will be played in Nanango today. The U12s final - Nanango v Murgon - will be played at Nanango State School from 8:30am. And the U14s final, between Nanango and the Kingaroy Jaguars, will be played at the Nanango Soccer Grounds from 8:15am. Spectators and supporters are very welcome at all games.
International Women's Day Dinner - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Quota Club will be holding an International Women's Day Dinner at the Kingaroy Senior Citizens Centre at the corner of Avoca and Kingaroy Streets in Kingaroy (opposite Super IGA) from 6:00pm onwards this evening. GP, skin specialist and University of Queensland lecturer Dr Isabelle Jonsson-Lear, and Red Earth Foundation chair Georgie Somerset will be special guest speakers. There'll also be a raffle, auction and prizes. Tickets are $45 per person - or $240 for a table of six - for a two course dinner, tea and coffee. Country Music Night - Wondai
Country music performers Kelvin, Errol and Glen Wiley and their mother Shirley Kehl - plus many other guest artists - will be getting together at the Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street, Wondai from 5:00pm until late this evening in a fundraising concert for the Queensland Cancer Council. This will be Shirley Kehl's last performance after the sudden death of her husband Viv last September, and also the end of the annual concerts the couple used to arrange at the Diggers Club. All fans and friends are encouraged to come along for a great night of contry music and memories.
Dance - Inverlaw Hall
A dance will be held at Inverlaw Hall on the Burrandowan Road (roughly 20km from Kingaroy) from 8:00pm until late this evening. Music will be supplied by Chattanooga and and there'll be the usual great supper and novelties, along with a big Lucky Door draw.
