91st Annual Murgon Show

The gates will open at Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon at 6:30am this morning and piping hot breakfasts will start being served in the Cattleman's Bar for the second (and main) day of the 91st Annual Murgon Show. This year's Show will feature a big range of horse and cattle events and things will move into full gear from 8:00am onwards with judging for stud cattle; led steers; prime cattle and poultry. There'll also be horse events for hacks, ponies and led horses in the main arena, along with a giant Dog Show (more than 325 entries!) and a top line-up of musical entertainment; a bumper Sideshow Alley; pavilion and trade exhibits; a very large photography display; and all the fun of a great Aussie fair. This year's Murgon Show will be officially opened at around 2:00pm in front of the grandstand by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, and there'll also be a spectacular fireworks display mid-way through the evening at around 6:30pm. Other fun things to look out for this year include the Proston Line Dancers on stage at around 2:00pm; the Mauritian Dancers at 2:30pm; Miss Showgirl and Miss Junior Showgirl; school displays; and a $100 prize in the Farm and Garden Produce section for the best square lucerne hay bale. Admission to the Show is $12 for adults; $8 for pensioners and students with ID cards; $3 for primary school students; or $32 for a family (2 adults plus dependent children). 14th Annual Maidenwell Folk Gathering

The second day of the 14th annual Maidenwell Folk Gathering will get underway at around 10:00am this morning at the Maidenwell Hotel and continue right through until late tonight (there'll also be a final day of folk music revelries tomorrow). The Folk Gathering is a pure folk music event (ie fully acoustic - no electrics are allowed) and because of this has built up a very loyal following over the years. A highlight of today's Festival activities will be chalkboarding which will kick off during the afternoon. The Festival itself is completely free to attend and there's also free camping available around the hotel if you want to stay overnight. Lots of great food will be available too but no BYO is allowed - you'll need to get your supplies from the Maidenwell Hotel if you want to party really hard. More details? Friendship Markets - Kingaroy

The third Saturday of the month Friendship Markets will be held at the Senior Citizens Centre in Avoca Street, Kingaroy from 6:30am to around 12:00pm today. QCWA Young Girls' Craft Group - Kingaroy

The QCWA Young Girls' Craft Group will be holding their regular third Saturday of the month meeting at the QCWA Rooms in Kingaroy Street, Kingaroy (just next to the RSL) from 1:00pm to 4:00pm this afternoon. The group is for young girls aged 10 years and older, who can learn useful crafts and home skills such as sewing, knitting, crochet, cooking, healthy eating, catering and presentation under the supervision of QCWA ladies and a supervisor. There's a small $2 charge each day to cover the cost of goods used, but all young girls are very welcome. Saturday Soccer - Kingaroy

An FFA Cup soccer match between the Nanango Panthers and Willowburn will be held at the Kingaroy soccer grounds at the end of Oliver Bond Street, Kingaroy this afternoon. The match is the second in the FFA Cup series, and the winner of today's game will go on to play USQ in Round 3. Kick-off is at 5:00pm and a large crowd is expected to turn out to support the South Burnett's side and take in what should be a pretty high-grade match. Admission is free and a canteen and bar will be running.

CareFlight Helicopter Bowls Fundraiser - Tansey

The Tansey Bowls Club on the Burnrett Highway at Tansey will be holding a fundraiser for the CareFlight Helicopter Rescue Service today. Bowls matches will kick off at 3:00pm (names in by 2:30pm) and this will be followed by a BBQ at 6:00pm, along with a multi-draw raffle. Everyone is welcome! More details? Ever wanted to build your own dreamcatcher? Saturday Cricket

The South Burnett's 2013-14 A-Grade cricket competition will enter its 19th round today with one-day matches which will kick off at 12:00 noon. In Murgon, the Murgon Crusaders will play Kingaroy RSL at the Murgon State High School; and in Nanango, the Nanango Scorpions will play Kingaroy Warriors at the Nanango Sportsgrounds. And in the B Grade competition, this year's season Grand Final will be played at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy from 12:30pm onwards between the Kingaroy Warriors and the Murgon Diggers. Both teams have had three consecutive victories against their opponents, and each will be seeking their fourth win in a row to take out the season's top honours - but only one team can do so. Spectators and supporters are very welcome at all games.

South Burnett Woodcrafters Meeting - Kingaroy

The South Burnett Woodcrafters will be holding their regular Saturday morning meeting at their clubhouse, which is located behind the Kingaroy Visitor Information Centre in Haly Street. from 8:00am to around mid-day today.
