Geiger Family Fun Charity Sports Day - Kingaroy
A giant Geiger Family Fun Charity Sports Day will be held at T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy from 10:00am this morning to raise funds for the family of Kingaroy Red Ants stalwart Lynda Geiger, who is terminally ill with cancer. The event is being jointly run by the Kingaroy Cricket Club and the Kingaroy Red Ants, and it will feature fun social 6-a-side cricket and touch footy matches all day, along with a BBQ and bar. For children, there'll be a jumping castle on site between 10:00am and 2:00pm, plus lots of raffles with some great prizes to be won. Nomination fees are $60 per team or $10 per player, and admission to the grounds is by gold coin donation. Fruit & Veggie Markets - Yarraman
Yarraman's monthly Fruit & Vegetable Markets will be running on the empty block at the corner of the D'Aguilar and New England Highways (opposite Bendigo Bank) from 7:00am to 12:00 noon today. These new markets run on the 4th Saturday of each month and offer a wide range of fresh fruit and veggies, along with plant and craft stalls.
Cats (The Musical) - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society will be holding their second performance of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Cats" at the Kingaroy Town Hall in Glendon Street, Kingaroy at 7:30pm tonight. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" to decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Cats first opened in the West End in 1981 and Broadway the succeeding year, and as of 2014 has become the second longest-running show in Broadway history, and the fourth longest-running West End musical. Tickets for performances can be obtained in advance from Kingaroy Office Central in Haly Street, but will also be on sale at the door. Four other performances will be held tomorrow at 2:00pm; next Friday at 7:30pm; and next Saturday at 2:00pm and 7:30pm.
Ladies Encouragement Day - Yarraman
The Yarraman Anglican Church will be hosting a "Ladies Day Of Encouragement" at St Phillips Anglican Church in Millar Street, Yarraman between 9:00am and 3:00pm today. This free event is fully catered and is being hosted by Rev Avriel Green. All ladies are welcome, but to assist with catering an RSVP would be greatly appreciated. Medieval Fayre - Nanango
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Nanango Art Society will be holding its second annual Medieval Fayre in George Street, Nanango from 7:00am to around 4:00pm today. This whacky, fun-filled day features all things medieval including wandering minstrels, market vendors, a Viking encampment, heavy fighting, rapier fighting, a medieval fashion parade and competition, illumination classes, tarot and palm reading, stocks and much, much more. There is also lots for the children to get involved with in the Kids Make & Do classes, boffer fighting and hobby horse jousting. The Fayre is a free event which takes a fun look at medieval times - so come along dressed in theme and have some fun! More information? Call Sandy on 0423-830-224. Medieval Banquet - Nanango
Here's something different! The Nanango Art Society will be holding a Medieval Banquet at the Nanango Cultural Centre in George Street, Nanango from 6:00pm until late this evening as the culmination of today's Medieval Fayre (see entry above). The Banquet will feature a bar, pig-on-a-spit with all the trimmings plus dessert, entertainment, dancing and a lot of ye olde frivolity. There'll also be a medieval fashion competition - guests are encouraged to come along dressed to the theme - and it looks like being a really great night out. Tickets are $35 per head for adults or $17.50 for young people aged 10 to 15 (under-10s are free), and you can obtain more information and/or RSVP by phoning Sandy on 0423-830-224 or by sending her an email.
Wondai Country Markets
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery's popular monthly Wondai Country Markets will be operating at Coronation Park in Wondai's CBD from 7:00am to 12:00 noon today. Today's markets will feature stallholders selling fresh fruit and vegetables, arts and crafts, useful knick-knacks and clothing. There'll also be live entertainment; lots and lots of other stalls selling great gifts and goodies; and special hand-made treasures from local artisans available from the Gallery's new "Studio" building just a short stroll across the park. The Wondai Kindergarten's BBQs will also be firing up from 6:45am to dish out hearty breakfasts to early bargain hunters. Dance - Booie Hall
A dance will be held at Booie Hall from 7:300pm until around 11:30pm this evening. Music will be supplied by a local band and there'll be the usual great supper, novelties and lucky door prize. Saturday Rugby League - Murgon
The Preliminary Finals of the South Burnett's 2014 rugby league competition will be played at the Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon today, with all the winners going on to the season's Grand Finals and the losers bowing out. If you're a league fan, today's games will offer yet another big weekend of super-duper action after last week's Major and Minor semi-finals. The action will kick off at 9:00am with the U12s (Cherbourg v Central Burnett), followed at 10:00am by the U14s (Murgon v Nanango). This will be followed at 11:00am with the U16s (Cherbourg v Kingaroy), then at 12:30pm with the U18s clash (Nanango v Cherbourg). After this - at 2:00pm - the Murgon Mustangs will play the Wondai Wolves in this week's A-grade match. Admission to the grounds is $5, a bar and canteen will be operating, and spectators and supporters are very welcome!
South Burnett Woodcrafters - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Woodcrafters will be holding their regular Saturday morning meeting at their clubhouse, which is located behind the Kingaroy Visitor Information Centre in Haly Street from 8:00am to around mid-day today. Saturday Soccer - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Evolution Solar Football League will be playing their Preliminary Finals at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street in Kingaroy today - and it should be a great day of football action for soccer fans as all teams battle it out for a place in the season's Grand Final. At 2:00pm, Barambah will play Gunners in 2nd Division; at 4:00pm, Nanango will play Gunnettes in the Women's Division; and at 6:00pm, Barambah will play Wests. A bar and canteen will be operating, admission is free and everyone is welcome!
Rob Johns - Kingaroy

Kumbia Brain Drain
SOLD OUT! Yes! It's on again and more mind-snapping than ever! The 21st Annual Kumbia Brain Drain will be held at Kumbia Hall on the Bunya Highway in Kumbia from 6:30pm until late this evening (competition commences at 7:30pm sharp). The event - which is the major annual fundraiser for Kumbia State School P&C - is a trivia-style tournament where teams of 6 compete for great cash prizes. Attendees at this year's Brain Drain are being encouraged to dress to the theme "Space Oddity" (ie something sci-fi) to be in the running for a prize as the best-dressed team. There'll also be the usual fun-filled audience participation games and raffles too. Nibbles, drinks and a hot and cold supper will be provided, but you'll need to BYO esky if you have a righteous thirst that needs specialised attention. Admission is still an incredibly slim $10 per person - minimum age is 15 - and a maximum of 35 teams can take part in the competition. More than $1,000 in prize monies is up for grabs! Note: All seats at The Kumbia Brain Drain were sold out in July.
