The first sod was turned on Tuesday in a vacant block of land for an exciting new project in Kingaroy … but in reality construction has already begun!
The Don Davey OAM Veterans and Community Centre will be located in Haly Street, opposite Memorial Park.
The modular building is being built by Oly Homes at Cooroy and is getting close to completion.
Oly Homes general manager Steven Nousala said the kitchen had already been installed and the tilers were now working inside the building.
The building (see photos, below) will be delivered to Haly Street in six pieces on six trucks.
The only work which will required on site – apart from the connection of services – will be the laying of concrete for the piers which will lift the building 800mm above the ground, well clear of any possible overflow from the nearby stormwater drain.
The land was donated to the Sub-Branch by the South Burnett Regional Council.
The project also received two grants in April under the State Government’s Honouring Our Veterans program:
- Major Capital Works Grants Program – $86,744.10
- Minor Capital Works Grants Program – $36,740.54
The smaller amount will be used to create various displays within the new centre.
The new centre will allow veterans and their families to access support services as well as strengthen community connections.
