A small ceremony was held at the site of the former Kingaroy Shire Council Depot in Pound Street on Wednesday afternoon to mark the start of an exciting new project for the region.
South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff said the construction of a Coles Supermarket on the long-vacant land would be a “game-changer” for Kingaroy.
Representatives from Coles and Hutchinson Builders attended the sod-turning ceremony which marked the beginning of construction on the site.
The redevelopment will stretch from Pound Street through to Kingaroy Street, with the main entry for vehicles via Kingaroy Street.
A redesigned Kingaroy / Baron Street intersection will include traffic lights and new turning lanes on both the north and south sides of the intersection.
Plans show the project will also include three speciality shops, a 245-space car park and a stand-alone, drive-thru fast food outlet.
The groundbreaking ceremony brings to an end a saga which began after Kingaroy Shire Council shifted its depot to Ivins Street in 2005.
Over the years, Kingaroy Council – and then the amalgamated South Burnett Regional Council – tested market interest for the Pound Street block on several occasions.
Extensive rehabilitation, which included the removal of tonnes of soil, was completed in 2013 which allowed the block to be removed from the State Government’s Contaminated Land Register which increased its attractiveness to potential developers.
