Current mayor Elvie Sandow has drawn the top spot on the ballot paper to contest the upcoming Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council election.

The official draw for ballot paper order for the Mayoral vote and the vote for Councillors was conducted by local Electoral Commission of Queensland Returning Officer Eric Law AM at Cherbourg on Wednesday morning.

Three candidates will be contesting the Mayoral role, currently held by Cr Elvie Sandow.

In ballot paper order, the candidates for Cherbourg Mayor are:

1. Elvie Sandow (incumbent)
2. Bruce Simpson
3. Arnold Murray

A ballot draw was also conducted for the election of four councillors. The official ballot paper order is:

1. Bronwyn Murray (incumbent)
2. Elgan Saunders
3. Errol Simpson
4. Carla Fisher
5. James Dodd Saltner
6. Gordon Wragge
7. Luella Watson
8. Leighton Costello (incumbent)
9. Daniel Weazel
10. Cindy Button
11. Thomas Langton (incumbent)
12. Fred Cobbo (incumbent)

Mr Law commented, that as an ex-councillor and ex-mayor,  it was very good to see the number of candidates who had come forward.

“You are the brave people,” he said. “You are the people who said ‘I want to try and do something for this community, and I’ll put myself out there’.

“A lot of people don’t like doing that … so I congratulate you on your candidacy.”
