Murgon dog owners will get a dog park … but they’ll need to wait until the South Burnett Regional Council can find the necessary funds to pay for it.

At the SBRC’s November general meeting, Councillors were told a recent community consultation session and an online survey run on the Council’s website had both approved the development of  a dog park in the town.

Cr Kathy Duff said support was “overwhelming”, with 90 per cent of respondents agreeing the proposed location for a dog park on a Council-owned block of land at 19 Douglas Street was a suitable location.

A dog park, Councillors were told, would provide an off-leash area where dogs and owners could safely let their dogs interact with other dogs.

Cr Jane Erkens agreed it was a “great thing that we go ahead with this,” noting that the benefits a dog park brought to a community extended beyond simply exercising pets.

“As our towns get bigger you do tend to lose that community bonding and people staying in touch with one another,” Cr Erkens said

“Dog parks are a great opportunity for dog owners to meet and a great way for communities to keep in touch.”

Cr Duff moved a motion that Council reserve 19 Douglas Street for the future development of a dog park, and include the project’s funding in the SBRC’s 10-year Building Capital Works program unless alternative funding opportunities such as grants can help find the money for it.

Cr Duff’s motion was seconded by Cr Danita Potter and carried unanimously.
