The SBRC will seek the views of residents in the Boondooma and Durong areas about the future of the Boondooma Community Centre

South Burnett Regional Council will hold a public consultation meeting on August 28 to help determine the future of the Boondooma Community Centre.

The Centre is located on the Durong-Mundubbera Road about 12km north of Durong Hall, and was originally Boondooma School.

After the school closed in 1999, ownership was transferred to the former Wondai Shire Council and the building was repurposed as a community centre which was used by a variety of local groups for meetings and workshops.

With the passage of time, however, many of the groups that once used the hall have ceased to exist and the building has suffered significant deterioration.

Council officers told an SBRC meeting in May that as far as they were aware no one had used the hall in the past two years.

They also said the hall’s stairs were unsafe; the building and its tennis courts had been under attack from termites; and soil movement beneath the hall had begun to twist the building off its foundations.

They believed that if the hall were to be restored to a usable condition, the cost of doing this would likely run to six figures.

Councillors voted to hold a public consultation meeting to get the community’s views on how best to proceed.

The meeting will be held on site between 9:30am and 11:30am on Monday, August 28.

Residents who can’t attend this meeting but would like to have their views known can complete an online submission on the Council’s web site.
