The South Burnett’s official COVID-19 tally of confirmed cases since the pandemic began has broken the 800 barrier.

Queensland Health’s latest statistics show 803 people have been recorded in the region as having had COVID-19; at December 13 this figure was three.

This is NOT the number of active cases – many people have recovered – but there have been more than 140 cases added to the total since February 1.

It is also underestimated as health officials believe not all people are reporting their positive RAT tests (despite urging to do so) and some people have had a very mild illness which they have not recognised as COVID-19.

On Wednesday, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council announced one new case in the community, with 16 people in isolation.

Cherbourg’s total number of cases since December 13 is now 301.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath

A shocking 39 deaths with COVID-19 were announced by Health Minister Yvette D’Ath and Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard at Thursday morning’s media update, but they both emphasised these had not all occurred in the past 24 hours.

Twenty-seven of the deaths extended as far back as January 17.

The increase in numbers was the result of reconciling data supplied by the Department of Births, Deaths & Marriages (ie. death certificates) with data previously collected from hospital emergency departments, public health units and residential aged care facilities.

There has now been a total of 438 COVID-19 deaths recorded in Queensland since the pandemic began, including 229 in aged care.

The toll in the Darling Downs Health region remains at 14.

There are currently 382 people being treated for COVID in public hospitals (down from 484 on Monday) including 33 in ICU with 17 patients on ventilators.

There are also 26 people being treated in private hospitals, with two in intensive care.

southburnett.com.au has been keeping track of some basic statistics for local Council areas since the re-opening of the State border on December 13.

These statistics, from Queensland Health, show the total number of confirmed positive cases per Local Government Area since the pandemic began in January 2020.

They are NOT the total of current ACTIVE cases but demonstrate how the virus has spread recently throughout the local community.

We have taken snapshots on Dec 13, Dec 21 and daily since December 29.

These figures are current to 7:00pm on Wednesday (Feb 16):

* On February 16, Cherbourg Council reported one new case, taking the number of active cases to 16 and the total number of cases to 301.

NB. Data is reported by Queensland Health daily but can vary over time due to case reviews. When we took the first snapshots, Cherbourg LGA had not been added to the list by Qld Health as no cases had been recorded there. From December 31, data is current to 7:00pm the previous day. Numbers for all regions must also be considered underestimated. Not everyone who has tested positive using a Rapid Antigen Test has reported their result to Queensland Health. Not everyone who has had a mild dose of the disease has been tested. Also, the official statistics show 190,679 positive results (as at February 16) which have not been allocated to a Local Government Area.
