Initial results are in from some of the “Better Health In The Community” conversations held in the Darling Downs West Moreton Public Health Network region.

Discussions last week at Kingaroy and Cherbourg were part of a series of 29 formal community consultations to be held in 13 towns.

Topics discussed included:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • Aged Care, including Palliative Care
  • Digital Health
  • Mental Health, including Alcohol and Other Drugs
  • Population Health, including Chronic Disease Management, Accessibility of After Hours Health Services, Immunisation, and Refugee Health
  • Workforce Health

Notes from the “After Hours Conversation” in Kingaroy on August 3:

  • Public hospital is working well with general after hours work
  • Incentivise GPs and health professionals into region using clever marketing to draw workforce
  • No bulk-billing after hours GP in the area and in-hours their books are full
  • Challenges with palliative care, mental health and general after hours’ services
  • Greater collaboration required between services
  • More co-ordination of service providers required

Notes from the Community Breakfast in Cherbourg on August 4:

  • Service providers are servicing more than just Cherbourg
  • Lack of public transport to referral centres
  • More co-ordination of service providers
  • Challenges with workforce development

A further discussion session will be held at Cherbourg on a date to be announced.
