Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien is encouraging Indigenous people aged 16-25 to apply for the National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) in Canberra.
“This is a great opportunity to learn about democracy, have your say on important issues that affect your community, meet Australia’s leaders and explore the nation’s capital,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The NIYP will enable participants to have their voice heard, and learn how to make a difference.”
Six Queenslanders will be among 50 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youths chosen for the program in Canberra, from May 23-29.
Participants will be chosen based on their community leadership activities.
The program includes expert training in how government works, how laws are made, public speaking and dealing with the media.
A highlight of the trip will be a two-day simulated parliament in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, where participants will debate bills and issues of importance to their community.
The final bills will be presented to the Australian Government for consideration.
The NIYP is run by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy in Canberra.
