The South Burnett Regional Council announced on Tuesday that businesswoman Gina Rinehart will again be sponsoring the South Burnett Community Christmas Lights Competition.

“Last year South Burnett residents showed overwhelming support for Mrs Rinehart’s interest in our region and our unique country lifestyle,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.

“Mrs Rinehart sponsored last year’s Christmas Lights competition through Hancock Prospecting and the Georgina Hope Foundation, which included some fantastic prizes.”

This week, Council received confirmation from Mrs Rinehart that Hancock Prospecting and the Georgina Hope Foundation would sponsor this year’s competition, offering the same prizes as last year.

“It is not yet known if Mrs Rinehart will visit our community during the Christmas lights competition, but she greatly enjoyed visiting last year and congratulated those she visited for the wonderful effort they had put in,” Mayor Campbell said.

“The number of entries and the friendly competition generated some truly beautiful displays last year, which made it very hard for our judges to decide on the winners.”

A $15,000 Singapore holiday will be the first prize for the South Burnett’s best Christmas lights display, with a $10,000 Singapore holiday prize for the runner-up.

There’ll be a $1000 first prize for the best business display, and $500 for the runner-up.

There will also be town and regional prizes for:

  • Blackbutt-Benarkin
  • Nanango (including Maidenwell and the Bunya Mountains)
  • Kingaroy (including Kumbia, Memerambi and Wooroolin)
  • Murgon
  • Wondai (including Hivesville, Proston and Tingoora)

Town and regional winners will each receive $500, and runners-up $300.

Entries will open soon and details will be available on the Council’s website
